Join AF-Capital Area Hub in celebrating Black History Month and learn about the history of our region through a walking tour and happy hour!
Join the AF-Capital Area Hub for a Black History Tour of Old Town Alexandria facilitated by guides from the Alexandria Colonial Tours company.
After the tour, join us at Union Street Public House for a happy hour and chance to discuss what we learned on the tour together.
The tour will run from approximately 2pm until 3:30pm on February 27th and will finish at 3:30pm. We will then head over to the Pub for drinks and bites. The happy hour will run to 6pm, however you can stay as long as you like if the conversation is flowing.
Due to ongoing city restrictions for health and safety, the tour will be limited to two groups of 8 guests each with their own guide. Masks will be required on the tour and in public areas of the restaurant.
For questions, contact [email protected].
AF Members can attend for free. To learn about AF membership and become a Hub member, click here. We look forward to seeing you!
About the Tour:
Alexandria’s African-American heritage is particularly rich and varied. Alexandria was a unique environment as home to one of the largest slave markets, and also one of the largest freedmen communities in the South prior to the Civil War.
On this tour you and your guests will see a glimpse into the day-to-day lives and stories of the African-American residents of town – both slave and freedman, living and working side by side from 1749-1865 – slavery to freedom.
You will hear stories of joy and love, industry and commitment, disappointments and death. You will learn how the changing laws challenged the community.
Each tour is a 60-90 minute walking tour, led by an experienced guide, covering 8-10 blocks.
