SALEM, MA — A 25-year-old Hyde Park man was charged Wednesday morning in connection with the Sunday night shooting of a Lynn man near the Brothers Taverna restaurant on Derby Street. Salem police said David Avalo was arrested about 9:30 a.m. by Salem police detectives and the Massachusetts State Police's Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section. He was to be arraigned at Salem District Court on Wednesday. Police said the shooting is not believed to be a random act and there is no general threat to the public. Police said the 26-year-old Lynn man was shot during a fight that broke out on Derby Street about 10 p.m. Sunday. The victim was taken to a Boston hospital. Salem police did not update his condition on Wednesday. Salem police said another man was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after they arrived to find a crowd yelling outside the Derby Street restaurant and the victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the midsection in the adjacent alley. Police said they were met with a "chaotic scene" with some people trying to push their way back into the restaurant. The second man was arrested "due to his actions as the officers attempted to gain control and establish order," but police said a search of the area yielded no suspects in the shooting that night. Anyone with information on Sunday's shooting is asked to call Salem police at 978-745-9700 or the anonymous tip line at 978-619-5627. This is the second Sunday night shooting in Salem in the last three weeks. On Jan. 24, two people suffered gunshot wounds in a shooting on Perkins Street. Salem police said have one person in custody, while another remains at large, related to that incident. EDITOR'S NOTE: Information for this article was supplied by the Salem Police Department.
