WALLINGFORD, CT — An online petition is calling on school officials to allow Wallingford seniors to have an outdoor prom this year.
The petition at change.org was launched just hours after Gov. Ned Lamont announced plans to increase capacities for event venues, according to WFSB 3.
Lamont announced Tuesday that private gatherings at commercial venues will be expanded to 50 percent capacity with a maximum headcount of 100 people for indoor events. Outdoor events will be capped at 200 people. The new rules go into effect March 19 and are contingent on coronavirus infection rates staying stable or trending downward from now, Lamont said.
More than 400 people have signed the "Sheehan Senior Prom" petition, which was created by Amy Connery, as of Wednesday night.
"There are less than 200 in the Sheehan Senior Class!" Connery wrote in the petition at change.org. "Why not think outside the box and have an outdoor prom in early June or late May? Why do the administrators have to say no to all the things that the Senior class deserve just because it's easier to say no and do nothing! The Seniors deserve better!"
Sheehan Principal Enzo Zocco told WFSB 3 that he is not against the idea of an outdoor prom and wants students to have the best possible experiences that state guidelines allow.
