HOBOKEN, NJ — An off-duty New Jersey State Trooper was charged with driving while intoxicated Friday night in Hoboken, where police say he first drove the wrong way down a one-way street, then veered into a pile of snow and finally collided with a Hoboken police car. Arrested was Roy Sanchez, 28, from Secaucus. A State Police spokesman confirmed Sanchez is a State Trooper and that he is currently suspended without paying pending the outcome of the case. Sanchez's blood alcohol limit was also twice over the legal limit and he had an open container of alcohol in his car, according to Hoboken Police. Hoboken Police said that around 1:57 a.m. Saturday, Hoboken Police Officer Harry Montalvo observed a white Chevy traveling the wrong way on First Street from River Street. As both cars approached Hudson Street, Montalvo activated his emergency lights and attempted to pull the Chevy over. However, instead of pulling over, the driver of the Chevy made a right turn onto Hudson and struck a pile of snow, police said. The driver then reversed and collided with Officer Montalvo's squad car, police said. The driver then proceeded forward and pulled over in front of Hoboken Police Headquarters at 106 Hudson Street, police said. The Chevy driver was identified as Sanchez, said police. Hoboken Police conducted a standardized field sobriety test and determined Sanchez was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. Sanchez was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Sanchez also provided breath samples and his results were twice over the legal limit, police said. He was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and possession of open container of alcoholic beverage in motor vehicle passenger compartment, police said. Sanchez was released to a responsible party. It was NJ.com that first reported Sanchez is a New Jersey State Trooper. Trooper Sanchez was based out of the Hope State Police barracks. In 2019, he was hailed as a hero in this NJ.com article, after he saved the life of a Warren County man who had accidentally shot himself. Sanchez created a makeshift tourniquet using computer cable and a decorative arrow, according to their report. His life-saving efforts were hailed by State Police at the time: https://www.facebook.com/NewJe... Arrest first reported in the Hoboken police blotter. With reporting provided by Caren Lissner/Patch.
