This desire to return to the church to the Book of Acts pattern placed the early Pentecostals at odds with both the broader church culture and dominant North American culture. Oneness Pentecostals were the most committed to the restorationist impulse, willing even to reject historic doctrines embraced for centuries if they contradicted apostolic practice. The restoration impulse was broader than theology; it touched practice as well. Rooted in Peter’s understanding that the Spirit was to be poured out on all flesh, early Pentecostals were intentionally interracial, multiethnic, and open to women in ministry. In a very real way, they prophetically lived out the New Testament ideal. However, pressure to accommodate to the broader North American culture silenced key elements of their prophetic voice. The contemporary church must find ways to reclaim its prophetic voice. Robin Johnston serves as the editor in chief and publisher for the United Pentecostal Church International. In addition he is the director for the Center for the Study of Oneness Pentecostalism as well as an adjunct professor in historical theology for Urshan Graduate School of Theology.
