This year Black Lives Matter Southern Utah Will be awarding three scholarships during a banquet on the last day of BHM! Black History Month initially started as “ Negro History Week”. A historian named Carter G Woodson proclaimed the second week of February to be Negro History week. It was chosen for the end of February to include Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln‘s birthday. This week was not only chosen to celebrate African-Americans but the history of African-Americans and members of other races connected to the history of African-Americans. Black History Month gives an opportunity to celebrate and share the impact of black heritage and culture in the US. In 1976 Black History Month was nationally recognized and adopted. This gives us a chance to reflect on important historic moments that are left out of the textbooks and not taught in our classes. Black History is American history.
