Description
MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — After hearing a lengthy detailed presentation from Community Development Director Carrie Tai, Manhattan Beach City Council members asked questions and then voted unanimously to add two code enforcement officer positions to city staff during last night's council meeting.
The city currently has three code enforcement officers, and Tai explained that three has not been sufficient to keep up with work in the best and most efficient ways possible. The duties of code enforcement officers is to patrol the city to ensure compliance with municipal codes. They respond to complaints concerning zoning, property maintenance, illegal dwelling units, trash container regulations, sign violations, and other code violations, including smoking in public and using leaf blowers. In their midst is a Residential Construction Officer who handles the relationship between residents and neighboring construction sites.
City Council conditioned the two new code enforcement positions on city staff head count remaining neutral. City Manager Bruce Moe said he could do that but could not guarantee that city costs would not increase by adding the two new code enforcement officer slots.
