"Can you name a Democrat Senator who cast a not guilty vote at Trump's trial? Were they lockstep with the party line? Is dissent allowed within Democrat ranks?" I'm not the person you are replying to, but I'll chime in. Yes, all 50 dems voted to convict. Is there not precedent for impeachment following the party lines, almost to a T? On article 2 of Bill's impeachment, the split was 50/50 right down the middle. In Trump's 1st impeachment, Mitt faced insane backlash for stepping out of party line. The 7 senators that stepped out of party line on the 2nd impeachment are facing backlash and death threats from the rabid trump cultists already. I don't believe any D senators wanted to acquit. I'd guess more than half R senators wanted Trump gone as well, but they had to save their butts from Trump's deranged cult followers. Did you not hear McConnel's speech? "He's guilty as hell, but you can't impeach someone after they leave office" - I do not think that is a correct interpretation of the constitution; the founders seem to have left impeachment open (and even encouraged) beyond time in office. It was an excuse and a shield to acquit, for the pansies in the Senate scared of being lynched. We all knew the political landscape right now was not ripe for conviction, regardless of guilt or innocence. Can you really dispute that? Impeachment isn't a criminal or civil trial, it's a political trial, and it's isn't subject to the same rules. Can you dispute that?
