Fire At Newark Building Collapses Roof, Causes 'Major Damage'

NEWARK, NJ — A three-alarm fire caused major damage and collapsed the roof of a commercial building in Newark on Tuesday, authorities said. According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the blaze took place at 221 Emmet Street. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 5:37 a.m. to find an "extremely heavy fire." The building sustained "major fire damage with a total roof collapse," authorities stated. A building at 219 Emmet Street was exposed to flames from the original fire and also sustained damage, authorities said. No injuries have been reported, authorities said. The fire was considered under control at 10:13 a.m., authorities stated. The Newark Fire Division's arson unit is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
