'Careless Smoking' Blamed For Valentine's Day Building Fire

GLENVIEW, IL — Fire officials are blaming "careless smoking" for a building fire Sunday in Glenview. One resident was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. An initial estimate of $20,000 in damage was sustained to the apartment of origin mostly related to water damage from the sprinkler activation, according to a release. The Glenview Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at around 6:48 p.m. in the 2600 block of Navy Drive. First arriving crews were notified by a building resident that smoke was coming from an apartment on the third floor with an audible water flow alarm. The initial crews entered the apartment and located the victim in one of the bedrooms, according to the release. The fire was contained to a mattress and extinguished by one sprinkler head in the room of origin prior to arrival of fire crews. The initial investigation resulted in a cause from careless smoking, according to the release. An apartment on the second floor and a first floor business also sustained water damage. The fire was put out at around 9:13 p.m. Glenview was assisted by the Evanston, Mount Prospect, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield and North Maine fire departments. Stay Patched In!
