Press release from the City of Berkeley: February 16, 2021 Press Contact: Echa Schneider, (510) 981-2480 Up to $10,000 available for Berkeley artist & performers; community members can apply microgrants of up to $500 Berkeley, California (Tuesday, February 16, 2021) - Help contribute to COVID-19 resilience and recovery in Berkeley by applying for a new City grant program that provides funding to Berkeley artists, performers, and residents for temporary creative projects responding to the pandemic. The Berkeley Art Works programs offers ways for all Berkeleyans to contribute. For artists and performers who live or work in Berkeley, grants can support projects with a budget of up $10,000. A supplemental microgrant program offers Berkeley residents sixteen and older up to $500 towards publicly accessible creative projects of their own. Neighborhood groups, non-profit organizations, businesses, and merchant associations can submit an application to host one or more art projects in their public spaces. Berkeley Art Works program supports COVID-19 resilience This initiative, a project of Berkeley's Civic Arts Program, invites proposals for projects across three themes: public health & wellbeing; economic recovery & resilience; and community connection and belonging. Some example projects may include: installations in empty storefronts or murals on boarded storefronts neighborhood-wide coordinated artistic front window displays creative performances that comply with health orders projects honoring essential workers chalk art competitions, scavenger hunts, or creative game-like interactive projects neighborhood projects that unite the community through creative expression, such as poetry walls This is not an exhaustive list. We welcome any project idea that both fits one of the program themes and complies with state and local COVID-19 guidelines to ensure social distancing and community health and safety. Apply for a Berkeley Art Works Project Grant or Microgrant Berkeley Arts Works Project Grants provide economic opportunities for Berkeley artists struggling during an economically challenging time, while Microgrants engage the community through the arts and creative activities. There is no deadline to apply. Applications will be reviewed monthly and projects will be unveiled throughout the city on a rolling basis until program funding is exhausted. Project Grants: up to $10,000 for Berkeley artists Berkeley Art Works Projects Grants are open to artists 18 and over living or working in Berkeley - including visual artists, performers, writers, social practice artists, makers, and other creatives. Grant amounts range from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the size of the project. Applications can be submitted by an individual artist or a team. Microgrants: up to $500 for Berkeley residents Berkeley Art Works Microgrants are open to Berkeley residents 16 and over regardless of formal artistic training. These grants of up to $500 to support publicly accessible creative projects throughout Berkeley's neighborhoods.
