BEVERLY, MA — Arlene Verde is organizing her first food drive this Sunday at Beverly High School.
She does not intend for it to be her last.
The Beverly resident said she hopes the "Just Love Food Drive" set for Valentine's Day in the high school parking lot will be the first of many to help fill up area food pantries under pressure during the coronavirus health crisis.
"People need food," she told Patch. "I feel so bad that all these people are suffering from food insecurity. I will do food drives as much as I can until all these food pantries have all the supply they can handle."
Verde said she organized the food drive with "her sweetheart" and that it will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"We realized that our leaders are busy organizing to get vaccines into people's arms and we were happy to step it up," she said.
Donations will go to Beverly Bootstraps and Family Promise of the North Shore.
"There are so many people out there who are struggling and just don't even know where to go," she said. "They have never ever had this need before. It's a huge deal. I am a government worker so I knew there was a huge need out there and I wanted to do something."
Among the items of most need are: cereal, peanut butter, meal replacement bars, tuna fish, soup, pasta, spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, canned chicken and rice.
Checks can also be made payable to either Beverly Bootstraps or Family Promise.
