PITTSBURGH, PA - The trends were cause for optimism in Allegheny County: Coronavirus case rates and deaths were down and the number of people being vaccinated against the virus was up. Then county health department director Dr. Debra Bogen brought down the mood Wednesday with her announcement that the first case of the coronavirus UK variant had been confirmed in the county. This particular strain of the virus potentially is more contagious and deadly than the original version and is expected to become the dominant strain as early as next month.
