We all knew tRump would never get 17 Repukes to convict him, we thought maybe 3 or 4, maybe even the 6 who voted with the majority that the impeachment trial WAS constitutional so the fact the vote to convict ended up 57 to 43 was more than we could have hoped for. By FAR, the most bipartisan POTUS impeachment in history, 7 times as many than the previous record. That being said, the worst thing was hearing Mealy Mouthed Mitch McConnell trying to pretend the reason he voted to acquit was the lame, constitutional argument about not having jurisdiction. 1) The majority of prominent, constitutional lawyers agree that it WAS constitutional. 2) tRump's own lawyers quoted from what they called THE book on impeachment but the author, Brian Kalt went on TV to refute that his book indicates an ex president can't be impeached. 3) McConnell's interpretation of Article 2, Section 4 would dictate that NO president can be impeached if they merely resign before the trial can take place. 4) McConnell claimed the framers of the Constitution excluded those no longer in office yet Thomas Jefferson WAS a framer AND the President of the Senate in our first impeachment and did not object to trying William Blount who was already out of office. McConnell knows more about what the framers intended than one of the framers? 5)The Senate had already voted on the constitutional issue, they voted it WAS constitutional, the Senators swore an oath to be impartial jurors yet acquitted tRump on the basis that it the trial was unconstitutional. A trial about a POTUS who refused to accept the results of a vote was tried by a Senate where the jurors refused to accept the results of a vote. Truth is stranger than fiction, John Grisham couldn't have come up with a story like this. If McConnell wants to pretend he adheres so strictly to the constitution, where is the clause that says a POTUS can't fill a seat on the Supreme Court if the vacancy happens in the last 11 months of their term? And if he can find that nonexistent clause, why did he ignore it when Ruth Bader-Ginsberg died? As I said, Mealy Mouthed Mitch McConnell. He'll say ANYTHING to appease the MAGATS even though he hates tRump, hates that he took over the party, hates that he lost him his seat as Majority Leader. 43 cowards showed their asses today. They know, and many have even said tRump was guilty but hide behind a fake, constitutional jurisdiction claim to avoid telling the cult minions the truth. They only have themselves to blame if what the insurrectionists said is true and they are coming back to finish the job. Their seat in Congress is more important to them than democracy, the country they swore to serve, to protect against all enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC. 7 "profiles in courage" today, 43 profiles in cowardice. What a shame.
