ELMHURST, IL — Two Elmhurst alderwomen say the city is limited in the tools it uses to deal with speeders. In a memo late last month, Ward 1 alderwomen Jennifer Veremis and Marti Deuter said the city should develop a standard response to complaints about speeding. They said speeding was the most common complaint that the Elmhurst Police Department receives. The city, they said, should make data available on speeds and traffic volumes to neighborhood residents and on its website. They also suggested pavement markings, signs and roadway changes. "Criteria for traffic-calming tools should be applied consistently," the alderwomen said. But they said tools such as pavement markings and cautionary signs are not applied as consistently as they should be. They said the police department is highly responsive to residents' concerns, but should expand the use of its tools. "The typical response includes the placement of a speed trailer, which provides feedback to drivers and sometimes collects traffic data and heightened enforcement, often for a limited time," the alderwomen said. While residents may note the increased police presence after a complaint, "information about data collected and enforcement actions are not typically communicated to neighborhood residents," they said. On Tuesday, the City Council is expected to vote on the alderwomen's request for a council committee to examine the issue and provide recommendations. Veremis and Deuter represent a ward that is in the Elmhurst's central section. It includes Elmhurst University, York High School, Courts Plus and Wilder Park.
