WALTHAM, MA — After more than five years of planning for it, Costco officials are hoping to bring gas to the Waltham location on 2nd Avenue. "We are excited about moving forward with our plan to construct the gas station, but first we need the Waltham City Council's approval," the members-only wholesale warehouse store said in an email Thursday. A council subcommittee may vote on the store's plan on Feb. 16, the email said, before asking members in favor of the move to email Waltham City councilors to support the plan. The company has been trying to get the city to approve a plan to let them open one of their popular gas stations for years. The wholesale store came to the Waltham Conservation Commission in 2015 to propose a project to retrofit existing sites at Costco with nine gasoline stations and 18 pumps. Members of the commission then expressed concern about drainage around the area to wetlands nearby. The commission gave permission to the plan in 2016, but based on input from the City Council and several abutters, the project was modified, including the addition of sidewalks and landscaping islands. The commission gave approval to the revised project in 2019. The closest Costco gas is in Dedham. Patch reached out to the company for comment. An automatic response said "Costco cannot comment on new locations unless they are opening soon." Jenna Fisher is a news reporter for Patch. Got a tip?
