BOSTON — The Red Sox have traded popular outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals, the team announced late Wednesday night.
Boston will be getting back outfielder Franchy Cordero from the Royals and pitching prospect Josh Winckowski from the New York Mets in the three-team swap.
Benintendi, 26, was the last remaining member of the Red Sox' talented young outfield that won the title in 2018. Mookie Betts was traded before last season and Jackie Bradley Jr. is a free agent.
Benintendi struggled through an injury-shortened season last year, but he's hit .273 with 51 home runs and 53 stolen bases in his career.
He also made one of the great catches in Red Sox history, snaring a sinking line drive to save an 8-6 victory in Game 4 of the 2018 American League Championship Series against Houston.
