MANCHESTER, CT — Amazon has signed a lease to occupy a decent portion of the massive former JC Penney warehouse in Manchester. At 1.95 million square feet, it is the largest warehouse and distribution center in Connecticut and one of the largest in New England, according to owner Winstanley enterprises. It is located at 1139 Tolland Turnpike in Manchester's Buckland Hills commercial district. Amazon will occupy 350,000 square feet of the complex, Manchester Director of Planning and Development Gary Anderson. said Thursday. More details will be released in the future, he said. Amazon could run four shifts all day and all week, officials said. Amazon becomes a name to the mystery tenant Winstanley officials hinted at back in December, when renovation plans were being revived by the Manchester Planning and Zoning commission. Winstanley officials hinted that the tenant would be a major company and could bring with it 600 jobs. Amazon will be joining Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch parent company of Stop & Shop and a JC Penney. In 2019, Ahold signed a 15-year lease to occupy 975,000-square-foot of the facility and Penney leased back about a third of the building. Amazon also maintains a major presence in Windsor, where it has a warehouse and is building a "fulfillment center."
