Learn the principles of improving security and implementing protective measures for your church, school, hotel or other open venue. Course Description A soft target is a location or facility that, due to a lack of appropriate protection measures, is exposed to specific hazards or threats and may present itself as vulnerable to attack. By their very nature houses of worship, hospitals, hotels, schools and other public venues can be considered soft targets. Join the ASIS Middle Tennessee Chapter and Michael Mann Security Services on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in Brentwood, TN and learn the basic concepts for protecting soft targets. Suggested Audience This course is designed for security managers, front-line uniformed security officers and supervisors, church security ministries, hotel security, teachers, first responders, school and hospital administrators, and anyone interested in learning how to protect at-risk facilities. Course Modules Defining Soft Targets This module will cover the characteristics of soft targets. Case studies will be used to illustrate how ineffective security protocols increase target attractiveness for adversaries. The Lone Wolf: A Threat Assessment Process for Soft Targets The majority of armed attacks are committed by the lone wolf or lone actor. This module will provide participants with a process for identifying and assessing lone actor threats. Conducting Vulnerability Assessments The vulnerability assessment is a process for identifying physical protection system weak points. This module will assist participants in identifying both potential vulnerabilities and existing countermeasures and their effectiveness in reducing site vulnerability levels. Behavior-Based Threat Assessment Techniques The concept for behavior detection for the purpose of assessing potential threats originated with Israeli airport security. After completing this module, participants will understand the process of behavior pattern recognition and its importance in preventing attacks. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) CPTED is a set of security principles designed to deter crime-related activity. This module will explore the basic strategies of CPTED and how security practitioners can manipulate their physical environment to reduce the incidence and fear of crime. Guard Force Management Private security services play a major role in protecting commercial business operations, shopping venues, hospitals and schools. This module will provide participants with a process for effectively implementing and managing both proprietary and contract security services. Inclusive Course fee does include a continental breakfast, lunch and beverages. Certificates of Completion Participants will receive a certificate of course completion. Certificates of completion can be used to gain Continuing Professional Education (CPE) activities that can be applied toward ASIS recertification. Presenter Michael Mann, CPP®, PSP®, CDEP has gained valuable experience in conducting anti-terrorism and physical protection operations for three decades. Michael conducted anti-terrorism operations in the United States and Central America while serving as a member of the United States Marine Corps Fleet-Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST); he successfully completed assignments in uniformed services, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and criminal intelligence for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD); he served as a Special Response Team (SRT) Area Commander and Vulnerability Assessment Team (VAT) member for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Federal Protective Forces (FPF); managed and developed physical protection programs for commercial nuclear fuel fabrication facilities and mission critical facilities; and Michael has managed protection details for at-risk persons and their families. Michael has Master of Science (MS) in Security and Risk Management; a Certificate in Terrorism Studies from the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, University of St. Andrews, and he studied terrorism and behavior-based threat detection techniques at Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. Michael is also a 32- year student, practitioner and teacher of modern pistol craft and self- defense, and a law enforcement certified police response to active shooter and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) instructor. Michael currently serves as the Chapter Chair for the ASIS Middle Tennessee Chapter, and he is the Director, Physical Security for Smile Direct Club.
