Description

LOS ANGELES, CA — A pileup on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway shut down all westbound lanes Thursday and seriously injured a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer and two others. Witnesses detained a motorist attempting to flee the scene, and the westbound side of the freeway is expected to remain closed for hours in the Downtown area, the California Highway Patrol said. A crash involving a big rig occurred in the Downtown area just before 10 a.m., according to the CHP Thursday. Shortly after, a driver struck a motorcycle officer at the scene and attempted to flee, but witnesses stopped and held down the fleeing driver until officers could make an arrest, the CHP reported. The incident occurred near Normandie Avenue, and CHP officials estimate the westbound 10 Freeway would remain closed east of Normandie Avenue for about six hours. The southbound Harbor (110) Freeway and westbound 10 Freeway connector also remained closed during the investigation.
