Louie, Billie, Duke, Ella, Bird, Diz, Miles, Herbie, Wynton – with just one word, you know most of these legendary Black jazz musicians. But what about some of the lesser known, and no less important, contributors to jazz? Fletcher Henderson, Mary Lou Williams, Sidney Bechet, JJ Johnson, Gil Scott-Heron, Tony Williams, Kamasi Washington and Jazzmeia Horn, to name but a very few.
During Black History Month, the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra wants to shine the spotlight on one of America's most treasured creations – jazz, which originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans over 100 years ago.
We've compiled a special Spotify playlist that showcases these outstanding artists, past and present. Please enjoy their music and learn about their unique contribution to this truly special art form.
