But what about some of the lesser known, and no less important, contributors to jazz? Fletcher Henderson, Mary Lou Williams, Sidney Bechet, JJ Johnson, Gil Scott-Heron, Tony Williams, Kamasi Washington and Jazzmeia Horn, to name but a very few. During Black History Month, the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra wants to shine the spotlight on one of America's most treasured creations – jazz, which originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans over 100 years ago. We've compiled a special Spotify playlist that showcases these outstanding artists, past and present.
