SMITHTOWN, NY — Between Smithtown High School East and High School West, 50 students competed in New York DECA, which reimaged its competitions this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release from the Smithtown Central School District.
The students prepared during a two-month period for the competition. These students now qualify for the virtual state competition in February. Additionally, 35 Smithtown students are completing their manuals for the state-level competition. The state competition is a much more competitive event, which will include role-playing situations.
More than 1,500 DECA students from various high schools in Suffolk County participated in the regional competition. DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America, and the organization's mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.
