NORTHPORT, NY — Mika, a female tabby around 3 to 4 years old, was named the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cat of the Week. The name Mika, in Japanese, means new moon, a sign of starting over and second chances. "That is exactly what this sweet girl needs, after being left behind in her neighborhood when her family moved away," Lora Wild, a volunteer at the rescue, wrote in an email. "She was seen for months eating out of garbage cans, trying to survive, when finally, a kind family decided to help. Mika was hiding under their deck laying up against the dryer vent trying to keep warm. They borrowed a trap and were able to lure her in." The cat rescue picked Mika up within the hour; and in the nick of time, as a snowstorm was about to hit. "When we put Mika in our rescue shed, she was literally starving," Wild said. "She ate an entire can of wet food and a bowl of kibble. Then she curled up in a soft bed with a blanket and closed her eyes and had a peaceful night's rest; no doubt the first one she had in a long time." Once Mika was vetted, the rescue realized she hardly had any teeth left. However, that doesn't stop Mika from eating, as she loves knowing she has a meal coming to her, according to Wild. "She is so grateful for being rescued," Wild said. "When you pick up Mika, she hugs you and purrs. Her lips are so defined she actually looks like she is smiling." Mika is now safe and warm in foster care, waiting for her furever home — and a family that will never leave her behind again. "This affectionate girl deserves nothing less," Wild said. Mika is spayed, has all her shots, is litter box-trained, micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.
