SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon students in preschool through second grade may return to their San Ramon Valley Unified School District classrooms Wednesday. The news comes after Contra Costa County's daily new case rate held below 25 per 100,000 residents five days in a row, paving the way for students to return to campuses over the course of a phased plan in the coming weeks. Students may still opt to stay home and continue remote learning. "Wednesday is a day we have all long anticipated," said Superintendent John Malloy in a news release. "I am profoundly grateful to see this day arrive, and to watch our dedicated staff welcome students back to their campuses, and, in the case of our youngest children, to see them come to school for the very first time." Next Wednesday, third-graders through fifth-gradersare slated to return, while middle and high schoolers can return for special day classes. Adult transition students can also return. High schoolers and middle schoolers may return once Contra Costa has remained in the red tier for two weeks. It's unknown when the county will move into the red tier, but it could be a ways off. Among the red tier requirements is having a COVID-19 case rate of 4 to 7 daily new cases per 100,000 residents — that's a fraction of the county's current case rate. SRVUSD asks families to ensure their acknowledgment forms have been electronically signed and turned in, and ensure students understand the importance of following social distancing measures and wearing face coverings.
