SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — Several earthquakes rattled the region around the Salton Sea Tuesday, but there were no reports of injuries or serious damage. The two largest temblors, both magnitude 3.8, struck near Calipatria, on the southeast end of the sea, at 5:01 p.m. and 5:27 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Society. Several smaller quakes were registered in the area prior and afterward. As of 5:50 p.m., more than a half dozen temblors were reported in the area Tuesday by the USGS. The Salton Sea region is notorious for earthquakes, which occur regularly. Last fall, an earthquake swarm struck the area, with 150 temblors registered in a 24-hour period.
