NEWPORT, RI — As more Rhode Islanders become eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, the city of Newport is taking steps to make the distribution effort as smooth as possible. Residents can sign up for the city's waitlist, and will be contacted once they are eligible for an appointment. Newport teamed up with Middletown for their vaccine effort, creating a joint vaccination site for the two communities. The site is located at the Community College of Rhode Island campus in Newport. Vaccines are given by appointment only, and are only available to residents 75 and older at this time. "We still have a ways to go until we can get back to some semblance of normalcy, but this joint vaccination site is one clear sign up hope," Newport City Manager Joseph J. Nicholson, Jr. said. Residents of Newport can sign up for the city's waiting list online, and will be contacted directly with information about when and how to get an appointment when there is availability. While any interested residents can sign up at this time, priority will be given to those aged 75 and older, a spokesperson for the city said. More information about the vaccination effort and the coronavirus pandemic is available on the city's website. Read more: Rhode Island Coronavirus Vaccine Rollout: Latest Updates
