The Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative (MBSC) and BCBSM are partnering to host an Obesity Summit.
The Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative (MBSC) and BCBSM are partnering to host an Obesity Summit to address Michigan's obesity epidemic. Michigan has one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation. Adolescents in our state have a 17% obesity rate. Adults face rising obesity rates and are at an all-time high of 36%, ranking 8th in the nation. Michigan expected to spend over $12 billion on obesity related healthcare costs in 2018.
The first annual Obesity Summit will be held on October 29, 2021 (planned as in-person event at the Radisson Hotel Lansing at the Capitol, but will adjust if needed). We are inviting POs, primary care providers and ancillary staff, as well as bariatric specialists forge ideas and develop partnerships to address this epidemic. This summit will feature experts who will present in each area, and allow attendees to discuss the latest and best practices for obesity management including behavior modification, dietary changes, and pharmacological approaches. The summit will also assist in identifying opportunities for collaboration between primary care providers and surgeons for patients undergoing or considering bariatric surgery.
We are particularly encouraging PGIP PO leadership and affiliated primary care physicians to participate in the Obesity Summit. Affiliated PCPs with a higher proportion of obese patients should benefit from the exchange of information at the conference.
