Press release from the City of Phoenix: February 9, 2021 Public Works (Trash and Recycling) Public Work Environmental Specialist's Quick-thinking Offers Comfort at Accident Scene February 9, 2021 1:00 AM Being in the right place, at the right time—that's the only way to describe Public Works Environmental Specialist Matt Davis on Jan. 14 at around 9:30 a.m. Davis, who started his career with the city in 2011, was waiting for the light to turn green at the intersection of Camelback Road and 83rd Avenue, when a Jeep Cherokee traveling south on 83rd Avenue immediately caught his attention. The Jeep ran through a red light, headed straight to the sidewalk and eventually crashed into the traffic pole on the southwest corner of the intersection. What seemed a mere half a second later, when his light turned green, Davis drove toward the Jeep, turned on the beacon lights of his work vehicle, parked it, and approached the Jeep that now has significant damage. It didn't take long for Davis to realize that the female driver was having severe seizures and was still convulsing as he attempted to open the passenger side door. As he expected, all the doors were locked. And to add another layer to the emergency, there was a rear-facing car seat in the back of the car that was covered with a baby blanket. Davis wasted no time in calling 911 for immediate help. About a minute after the 911 call, the driver of the Jeep slowly gained consciousness, and was able to open her door. After Davis was assured the woman was stable and coherent, he quickly checked on the baby in the back seat. The 3-month old appeared to be fine, did not show any signs of injury, and seemed unfazed by the whole incident. Davis provided his account of the accident when Phoenix Police and Fire arrived. He let the first responders do what they do best. And Davis…well, this United States Army vet went on his merry way to do what he does best — engaging with the community and educating them on the proper way to dispose residential waste materials. Thank you, Matt, for your service in the military and as an essential worker! This press release was produced by the City of Phoenix. The views expressed here are the author's own.
