Grand Stand Pictures brings two local historians to discuss the relevance of this film to the Black Freedom Struggle in Grand Rapids
Join Grand Stand Pictures with community partners in a special screening and conversation about the film Judas and the Black Messiah, which by the way features the artwork of internationally acclaimed GRAND RAPIDS artist, Emory Douglas, the former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party.
Immediately following the film, engage in a dynamic conversation with Dr. Randal Jelks, historian and author of African Americans In The Furniture City; and community elder and historian Taalib El Amin. Hear how GR Black history and organizing intersects with the themes of this film. Ask your questions about the Black Panther Party.
Grand Stand Pictures is producing the full length documentary film A City Within A City, based upon the book of the same name by Dr. Todd E. Robinson. Robinson is executive producer of the film, while Dr. Jelks’ Backatown Productions is serving as a producer, and El Amin as community historian.
Grand Stand Pictures is inviting influencers to embrace the “Grand Champion Pledge,” a commitment to help define our future by elevating voices of resilience, ingenuity, and talent, unveiling the many unheralded and overlooked stories that truly make our community grand!
Safe social distance, masking-up and all health protocols will be followed for this event. All rows open. Please leave two seats open between your party and the next.
See us for free parking validation at screening for downtown Studio Park lot.
Restaurants are open in DowntownGR, so be sure to have dinner afterwards at one of these fine establishments.
