NEWTON, MA — The state of the city is strong, but, according to Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, she sees challenges on the horizon. The mayor announced she intends to share ways to address those challenges in her fourth State of the City address at 7 p.m. Wednesday. "Even after a year of hurt, of loss and of upheaval, I can report that the state of the City is strong, resilient and good," Fuller said in a statement. "Together we've leaned in, we've stayed home, worn our masks, and month after month after month made sacrifices to get to this place when we can start to feel optimism." Wednesday night Fuller will give the State of the City Address and outline what those challenges are and what she sees as a vision to tackle them. Her speech last year focused on rising home prices, traffic and threats to the environment. In 2020 Patch asked council candidates up for election what they thought the biggest issue facing the city was: They all said fighting the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, managing transportation issues, mitigating the effects of climate change, and proactively addressing development and zoning needs topped the list. Other challenges that made the list: managing the budget, affordable housing, and ensuring transparency in government. How to watch: The annual speech will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 10, at Newton City Hall in the City Council Chambers. You can also watch online at NewTV.org, which will be carrying the event live and will re-stream it later. Zoom Link, the passcode is: 917074, and the Webinar ID is: 884 2570 8332.
