FRAMINGHAM, MA — A Black History Month exhibition highlighting events from local communities is planned for Saturday, according to organizers Massachusetts Standing Up for Racial Justice. The online Black History Month exhibit will happen over the course of five hours beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature a look back at past Black History Month celebrations in Framingham, Natick, Sudbury, Wayland and other local communities, according to organizers. Attendees will also be able to give short speeches during the event. The exhibition will end with a call to action against racism. Black History month runs from Feb. 1 to March 1, and has been recognized by the federal government in the U.S. every February since 1976. But the month got its start in the 1920s when Harvard University historian Carter Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), which recognized a Black history week. The event turned into a month-long celebration at the end of the 1960s when colleges and schools across the U.S. began observing, according to the Library of Congress. The Framingham Public Library has collected local events and resources for Black History Month 2021.
