BELMONT, MA — The Belmont Select Board finalized the contract for the town's new fire chief, David DeStefano. DeStefano is the battalion chief with the North Providence Fire Department in Rhode Island. He interviewed and was selected for the position on Jan. 21 at a public Select Board meeting alongside acting Belmont Fire Chief Wayne Haley and Batallion Chief with the Waterbury Fire Department in Connecticut, James Peplau. DeStefano has been going through contract negotiations since late January and the Select Board finalized the contract at its latest meeting. DeStefano will replace former chief David Frizzell. During the interview process, the Select Board noted the decision between DeStafano and Haley was tough but thought the department would benefit best with both in leadership roles. The Select Board suggested Haley takes over as assistant fire chief and that the role be re-examined to better fit and accentuate Haley's skills. DeStefano has been with the North Providence Fire Department for over 30 years. He has experience as an instructor at the Rhode Island Fire Academy and authored pieces for fore service publications and manuals.
