Berner Students And Staff Are 'Souper' Generous

MASSAPEQUA, NY — It may have been called the "Souper Bowl," but students and staff at Berner Middle School weren't limited to bringing in just soup for the annual February food drive. Any non-perishable goods, such as canned vegetables and boxes of macaroni, were welcome. The Chief's Challenge club, under the direction of adviser Caroline Glynn, hosted the food collection in the week leading up to the biggest football game of the year. They promoted the drive by hanging up posters around the school, and their efforts were successful as students and staff donated several hundred items in just three days. Students also watched a video about childhood hunger during homeroom to learn about the need. There were two boxes in the auditorium lobby, one for each of the two teams playing in the game, so donors could place food in the box of the team they thought would win. All donations were given to YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa, which operates a food pantry. Chief's Challenge member Mia Giannico said the food drive is important at this time of year because many food pantries have a decline in donations after the holiday surge, yet the need to provide for hungry families on Long Island remains.
