FROSTPROOF, FL — A burglar was shot and killed early Sunday morning after trying to break into a home in the Frostproof area, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
The burglar, Jory Plummer, broke into a home at about 1 a.m., investigators said. The husband and wife and their three children were asleep when a bang noise woke the parents.
The father saw the front door had been forced opened, according to deputies. He armed himself with a gun, police said.
The husband told police he found Plummer outside, in front of the home, yelling obscenities at him. The husband told the suspect, numerous times, to leave and just go home, according to authorities.
Plummer was described as "out of control," to police by the husband. The suspect charged at the husband, who, in fear for his life, fired one round from his gun at Plummer hitting him, investigators said.
Plummer then turned and headed away from the residence. After walking a few feet, Plummer turned around and charged at the husband again, and the husband shot Plummer a second time, detectives said.
Plummer was taken to Sebring Hospital where he died.
"People have a right to be safe in their home, and when necessary, defend that safety," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "At this point in the investigation, the evidence indicates that the resident acted in self-defense."
