JOLIET, IL — Bail was set at $50,000 for a 37-year-old Joliet man who hit his roommate in the head with the roommate's new hatchet late Monday night, according to Joliet police. In addition to smacking his roommate in the head, Daniel Norris threatened to kill the man and cut off his face, Joliet police reports show. Norris has been charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a weapon. Police said he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Joliet police rushed to the house in the 200 block of Hunter Avenue around 10:10 p.m. for a domestic violence call. "Officers determined that a male victim had been battered by his roommate, Norris," Joliet police said. "Further investigation showed that while the victim was inspecting a hatchet that he had received in the mail, Norris came into the room and lunged at the victim." Joliet police say Norris grabbed the hatchet and hit his roommate with it, causing bleeding to the man's head. "Norris then held the hatchet to the victim's neck and threatened to kill him and cut off his face," Joliet police said. A struggle ensued and the victim was able to free himself and call 911, prompting Joliet police officers to rush to the house on Hunter Avenue. Norris and the victim were both taken by ambulance to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center to treat their injuries. The man clubbed with the hatchet did not suffer life-threatening injuries, police reports show. Norris was eventually booked into the Will County Jail around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Norris was recently in the Will County Jail from Nov. 11 until Dec. 14 after Joliet police arrested him on charges of obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and criminal damage to government property. Court records indicate Norris lives on Joliet's West Jefferson Street at the Star Motel.
