Description
ELMHURST, IL — Last week, the Elmhurst police blotter indicated a school bus struck a parked fire engine at the city's north fire station. The bus driver was cited on a charge of injuring property.
But the blotter did not indicate how a bus could have hit a fire engine parked at the station, 404 N. York St. So Elmhurst Patch filed a public records request for the police report and received it Tuesday.
According to the report, fire department personnel placed a "visible" orange traffic cone in the lane nearest the station on the four-lane road. This allowed the station to divert traffic to the inside southbound lane because the tower truck was temporarily parked in the station's driveway and hanging partially onto the road, police said.
The bus driver, 74-year-old William F. Cavico of Villa Park, did not realize the tower ladder of the fire engine was hanging over the road as he drove past the cone, the police report said. The roof of his school bus struck the bottom side of the tower ladder, police said.
The incident was about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 1.
