Description
Happy new year!! Years like this, in which we’ve all experienced so much turmoil and loss, it’s normal to confine Losar observance to the home, celebrating with family, food, and prayer. It’s comforting to savor traditional treats - I’m so happy to be able to share Losar again this year. *momos* To keep them from sticking together and coming apart, as they are likely to do is packaged cooked or raw, the momos will be sold frozen. Depending on how I’m able to set things up, you may need to knock on the door so I can get your momo order from the freezer. Simply put them frozen into a hot steamer (water below should be boiling), greased or lined with parchment. When they are ready, the steam will be “dry.” The momos will be firm in the middle (not so much in the case of veg) and the dough shouldn’t be sticky. 10-15 minutes for meat momos, 10 should be plenty for veg momos. Alternatively, you can cook them as potstickers - I like to start by arranging a layer of frozen momos in an oiled nonstick skillet on medium high heat, covered with a domed lid. When the bottoms start to brown, (carefully) add some water to the pan and keep covered so they steam. When the water has evaporated and the bottoms are crisp, the filling should be cooked. *Chang* (home brew rice drink) will be available for direct purchase at the time of pickup, so please bring cash or card if you’d like to take home a bottle of chang ($15). Menu: Phingsha - a celebratory staple, the long bean thread noodles are an auspicious portent of longevity, braised with beef and potatoes. Serves 2 alone, more with other dishes. Phaksha labu - pork belly braised with daikon radish, home canned tomatoes, and greens. Excellent with tingmo steamed bread. Serves 2 alone, more with other dishes. Sha momo - dumplings filled with beef & Tibetan seasonings. Sold by the dozen. Tse momo - dumplings filled with homemade cheese, potato, spinach, and onions. Sold by the dozen. Tingmo - steamed buns. Sold by the dozen. Khapsey - fried butter cookies. A must for any Tibetan celebration. Dresil - sweet rice, another Tibetan celebratory staple. Basmati rice thick with honey and butter, studded with raisins and coconut. Fun fact - although the flavor is totally different from the Christmas treat “arro’con dulce,” every Puerto Rican who has tried my sweet rice has gushed about it. *because it is the New Year holiday for me, I will not be offering delivery. But my goal is to be outside to offer my greetings for the holiday and to put your order together, since it may not be possible to set out bags with frozen momos and such as. I’ll try to wear a fancy outfit for you. *can’t make it Friday? Come Saturday (same time frame)! Just email me to let me know that you’d like to pick up Saturday.
