YONKERS, NY — An off-duty Yonkers Police Department sergeant struck and killed a pedestrian in a car accident Monday. Yonkers police said the incident happened around 1 p.m. in the area of Kimball and Fox avenues. The sergeant called 911 to report she was involved in an accident where a pedestrian was struck, police said. First responders arrived and immediately rendered medical aid to 80-year-old Albert Farina of Yonkers, and he was taken to a local area trauma center. He later died from his injuries, police said. Detectives from the Major Case Squad, Crime Scene Unit and Digital Forensics Unit, along with accident investigators from the Traffic Unit, came to the scene of the accident and interviewed witnesses, recovered surveillance video and reconstructed the accident scene. The preliminary investigation found that the off-duty sergeant was traveling southbound on Kimball Avenue in her 2005 Toyota Corolla when she struck the man who had started to cross Kimball Avenue north of Fox Avenue. Police said the sergeant, who is a 13-year veteran of the department and is assigned to the 2nd precinct, has been cooperating with investigators. At this time, no violations or criminal charges have been filed, according to authorities. Investigators said they are continuing to develop information.
