Description

Press release from the City of Pelham: December 16, 2020 The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has been made aware of scam phone calls being made impersonating and employee from the Water Board. The scammer demands a credit card number over the phone to pay for an overdue water bill and threatens the victim with shutting off their water. The Sheriff's Office recommends you NEVER provide personal information over the phone, including credit or debit card numbers. If someone calls demanding payment for an overdue bill, it is safer to go to a local office to handle the issue in person. If in doubt or if you are unable to go in person, you can always hang up with the unknown caller and dial a known and trusted number, such as the one on your bill or statement to verify your account status. Remember, scammers can change the way their phone numbers look on caller ID to appear legitimate. Stay safe Shelby County. This press release was produced by the City of Pelham.
