SARASOTA, FL — Sarasota Memorial Hospital's Internal Medicine Practice in Newtown will host a coronavirus booster shot clinic Wednesday for individuals it previously administered the first dose of the vaccine to at a Jan. 13 pop-up clinic for that community.
That day, SMH administered about 400 first doses of the Moderna vaccine to Newtown residents who are 65 and older, according to the hospital's COVID-19 vaccine webpage.
Wednesday's second-dose clinic at the practice, located at 1825 Dr. Martin Luther King Way, is only available to those vaccinated Jan. 13. Those vaccinated during the first event will receive their booster shot at the same time slot assigned for their first dose.
To receive the second dose at the Newtown clinic, attendees must bring their ID and their COVID-19 vaccination record card. If possible, bring a signed consent form, which can be downloaded here. Consent forms will also be available at the clinic.
The hospital stressed that there will be no new second-dose appointments and no first-dose appointments available Wednesday.

Dr. Wilhelmine Wiese-Rometsch, director of SMH's internal medicine program, a partnership with Florida State University, told WTSP that Newtown, an historic Black community in Sarasota, "is one of the most underserved communities" in the city.
She also noted that there's been a smaller minority turnout at the vaccination clinics held countywide, which is why they targeted Newtown for a pop-up distribution event.
