Description
Creative, Supportive Upright Bass Lessons It is no secret that Upright bass (or double bass, or acoustic bass, or doghouse bass….) is a technically challenging, steep learning curve instrument. Its size, amongst other characteristics, can make picking it up somewhat daunting. This doesn’t mean that you can’t start playing today, and use it as a conduit to further your creative life. I have been playing professionally for over ten years, have studied music at the college level, and have had the opportunity to study under and perform with wonderful musicians in both Colorado and New York City. I took a somewhat unconventional approach to learning the instrument outside of the “classical” world, and would like to assist players who are choosing to follow this path. My first pillar of instruction is a focus on technique, such as comfortable posture, sound production, intonation, and fingerboard layout. This will allow students to play with confidence and without discomfort. I teach my students pizzicato (plucked) arco (bowed) and “slap” bass (commonly used in rockabilly, bluegrass, western swing and more) depending on their interests. The second pillar is music, such as learning and writing basslines, musical notation, functional harmony, and tools to communicate with fellow musicians. Although helpful, I do not require my students to read music. I strive to meet students where they are and build off of strengths while challenging them to explore and dig deep into the content. I am particularly interested in jazz, and would love to share that enthusiasm with students who are also interested. That being said, I have performed in pretty much every musical context available for bassists, and have taught students primarily interested in rock, funk, country, folk, and pop as well. Many of my past students have been electric bassists looking to switch over, but I’ve taught total beginners and advanced players who were looking to learn specific skills to expand their technique and knowledge base. I take students on a sliding scale depending on their financial situation, particularly now due to the pandemic. I can teach online or in Denver, or at your home for a small travel free (and with covid precautions.) Please visit my website at jasonbertonebass.wordpress.com to hear some of my music and see a full resume. I’m looking forward to helping facilitate your growth as a musician and artist.
