LA GRANGE, IL — La Grange saw the lowest weekly percentage increase in new coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 1,761 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 17 from a week before, or a 1 percent increase, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The previous weeks were, chronologically, 4.6 percent, 6.4 percent, 3.4 percent, 2.5 percent and 1.9 percent. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of coronavirus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 30. The latest death was Jan. 28. All the local deaths have been those who were 62 or older, according to the medical examiner. The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.7 percent. Of the entire population of La Grange and La Grange Highlands, 9.2 percent have been infected with the coronavirus. About a tenth of 1 percent of the population have died from the virus. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,146,341, up 1.8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 19,633 state residents. Nationally, 26.8 million people have caught the virus, up 3.2 percent from the week before. A total of 460,582 people have died from the virus in the United States.
