Man Threatens To Rob UPS Driver: La Grange Cops

LA GRANGE, IL — A UPS driver who waved another driver to move forward got a robbery threat instead, La Grange police said. A Countryside man was later arrested. In the early evening of Jan. 22, the UPS driver was headed south on Sawyer Avenue when he stopped at Lincoln Avenue, according to a police report, which Patch obtained through a public records request. A westbound SUV driver was stopped at Lincoln. The UPS driver told police he wanted to turn his truck around, so he flashed his lights to let the SUV driver know to cross the intersection first. When that didn't work, the UPS driver opened the driver's side door of the truck to tell the SUV driver to go across. However, the SUV driver, identified as 26-year-old Devantae J. Stewart, got out of his car and warned the UPS driver that he had better go before he robbed his truck, according to the report. The UPS driver told police he again told the driver to go ahead. But Stewart approached the UPS truck with his hands in his pockets, saying he would pull the driver out of his truck, the report said. As the UPS driver moved away, he heard Stewart strike the driver's side of the truck, police said. Police found Stewart shortly after, and the UPS driver identified him as the suspect, according to the report. Stewart's clothing was similar to the description that the UPS driver had given, the report said. Stewart said he was not involved in the incident and that he was coming back from his barbershop in Bridgeview. He said he worked for FedEx, so he would "never mess with a delivery driver." According to the report, an officer got doorbell camera footage at Sawyer and Lincoln in which a horn could be heard and a man telling another, "Yo ass betta keep it movin' before I rob that truck." Stewart was charged with disorderly conduct, released and given a date to appear in court, according to the report.
