LAKE COUNTY, IL — A Lake County sex offender is behind bars again after new allegations surfaced regarding the sex assault of two girls more than ten years ago, authorities said. Bail has been set at $100,000 for Michael R. Olofson, 50, following his arrest Friday at his home. He is charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, class X felonies, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, class 2 felonies, after the Lake County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the sex assault reports. He sexually assaulted the girls, who he was related to, several times at a home in the 39400 block of North Highview Drive in Antioch Township for over a year, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. The females he targeted recently decided to file a report with police. "As with all victims of abuse, the victims in this case had a lot of courage to come forward and discuss the abuse they endured for years," said Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg in a statement. "I want every victim of sexual assault to know we are always here for you. We will always be your advocate and will always do everything we can for you." Olofson was registered as a sex offender due to a prior possession of child pornography charge. He is next expected in court on Feb. 23.
