ELMHURST, IL — For the second week in a row, Elmhurst set another low in new coronavirus cases since the beginning of the crisis. As of Sunday, the city saw 51 new coronavirus cases in the last week, or a 1.4 percent increase, for a total of 3,582. That is down from the previous week's 2 percent. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one over the last week, to 58. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,146,341, up 1.8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 19,633 state residents. Nationally, 26.8 million people have caught the virus, up 3.2 percent from the week before. A total of 460,582 people have died from the virus in the United States. As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for 25 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is down by 13 from the previous week. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 164 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by two from a week ago. Since March, 1,449 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
