New Noxious Weed Confirmed In Dakota County: MDA Report

DAKOTA COUNTY, MN—A noxious weed called Common Teasel was confirmed to be in Dakota County in 2020, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture said in a news release Monday. The agency said it's the first time the weed was confirmed in the county. According to the MDA, Common Teasal is a short-lived perennial with a spiny flower and seed head. It prefers sunny and open habitats, such as pastures or roadsides. It is considered a noxious weed because it outcompetes and takes resources away from natural foliage, which reduces potential habitats, wildlife forage, and overall species diversity. Grazing animal species will not eat Common Teasal. The MDA assists local governments in weed management and enforcement of Minnesota Noxious Weed Law.
