Description
The UCSF Hypoxia Lab is recruiting African American volunteers for paid research in pulse oximeters.
Our lab tests pulse oximeters for accuracy. A pulse oximeter is a device that can detect how well your blood is oxygenated noninvasively using light. We have various studies that test the accuracy of these devices under different conditions. Our lab has shown that pulse oximeters do not read accurately in people with dark skin, which is likely a contributing factor to the inequity seen in healthcare. Since most pulse oximeters that are marketed in the US test through our lab, we believe we can make difference. One of the best ways we can do this is by having more people of color participate in our research. This will allow companies and the FDA see that there is a bias in these devices and will hopefully stimulate more research into developing pulse oximeters that are accurate in all skin tones. We are really looking for more people of color to participate in our research. Please contact us to learn more about the studies we are recruiting for.
