Adult Events BLACK HISTORY MONTH SERIES: A People's Guide To Greater Boston ON ZOOM (*RR) Sunday, February 7, 2pm Join Joseph Nevins, Suren Moodliar, and Eleni Macrakis -- authors of A People's Guide To Greater Boston -- to learn about the well-known and little-known significant places and people in our area involved in movements to abolish slavery; to end war and militarism; to achieve Native sovereignty, racial equity, gender justice, and sexual liberation; and to secure workers' right. The Boston Globe praises their work: "It's a timely, intelligent and necessary guide, one that deepens our understanding of where we live now and reminds us of the power that regular citizens have to work against powers and systems that are, now as then, in urgent need of change." WGBH also recognized the book's importance: "Think you know all about Boston? Think again. 3 local co-authors comb through centuries of Greater Boston's history to discover untold stories from underrepresented communities. Not your average guidebook." Tewksbury Job Seekers Networking Group: Calming The Chaos ON ZOOM (*RR) Monday, February 8, 2pm Calming the chaos deals with the reality that if you are not determining how your life is spent, someone else will do it for you. This workshop will serve as a wake-up call to take ownership of your life. Learn how to manage your personal energy, rather than your time. Discover tools on how to eliminate stress and any loss of meaning in your life. Led by life design coach Lynette Culverhouse. BLACK HISTORY MONTH SERIES: African Americans As Subjects & Creators In American Art ON ZOOM (*RR) Monday, February 8, 7pm Martin Luther King, Jr. once said "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice." This program examines that arc as it relates to African American history enshrined in American Art. From colonial era portraits to 19th-century and Jim Crow-era prints to 1960s Civil Rights photography, art educator Jane Oneail, owner of Culturally Curious, will provide a visual overview of African American oppression, struggle and progress towards equality. BLACK HISTORY MONTH SERIES: The Role Of The Press In Perpetuating Slavery ON ZOOM (*RR) Tuesday, February 9, 7pm Join Professor Carl Robert Keyes for a stunning exploration of "The Slavery Adverts 250 Project," which chronicles the role of newspaper advertising in perpetuating slavery in the era of the American Revolution. The project seeks to reveal the ubiquity of slavery in eighteenth-century life from New England to Georgia by republishing advertisements about enslaved people – for sale as individuals or in groups, wanted to purchase or for hire for short periods, runaways who liberated themselves, and those who were subsequently captured and confined in jails and workhouses. The project aims to provide modern audiences with a sense of just how often colonists encountered these advertisements in their daily lives. The frequency of these newspaper advertisements suggests just how embedded slavery was in colonial and revolutionary American culture in everyday interactions beyond the printed page. Poetry Circle ON ZOOM (*RR) Wednesday, February 10, 1:30pm Anyone interested in reading and chatting about poetry is invited to register and discuss a handful of poems monthly. We will email poems starting February 6th. At Poetry Circle, we believe in reading and responding to poems from where we are. You do not have to be an expert to participate; in fact it can be more fun to come with a curious mind! Contact Diane Giarrusso, [email protected], 978-640-4490 x 208 to register or with questions. Non-Fiction Book Group -- My Beloved World ON ZOOM(*RR) Thursday, February 11, 10:30am Join us for a discussion of My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor. Sotomayor recounts her life from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench. Her resolve lead her to extraordinary heights before the age of 40. This discussion will be conducted virtually via Zoom. Please email Noelle at [email protected] and she will send you the link to the meeting. VIRTUAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR SERIES: Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich Discusses "The System" ON ZOOM (*RR) Thursday, February 11, 7pm Millions of Americans have lost confidence in our political and economic system. With the characteristic clarity and passion that has made him a central civil voice, Robert B. Reich shows how wealth and power have interacted to install an elite oligarchy, eviscerate the middle class and undermine democracy. Join us for an engaging conversation with Mr. Reich as he speaks about his latest book, The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It. Christopher Lydon, host of the original podcast, Open Source, heard in Boston on WBUR, will moderate. Robert Reich is Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations and has written fifteen books, including the best sellers: The Common Good, Saving Capitalism, Supercapitalism, and Locked in the Cabinet. His articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal, and he writes a weekly column for The Guardian and Newsweek. He is co-creator of the award-winning film "Inequality for All," and the Netflix original "Saving Capitalism," and co-founder of Inequality Media. He lives in Berkeley and blogs at robertreich.org. This particular trivia night will include general trivia questions, plus questions involving Black History, Valentine's Day/love, Purim, the Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards, and other events that take place during the winter. The ability to view slides on a screen is all you need for this fantastic trivia fun! Please note that trivia questions are geared towards adults in challenge rating. (If families want to play together, however, there are no "embarrassing" questions or content.) Registration is required. There is a 35-team limit. Only one team member should register. That registration will cover his or her entire team. BLACK HISTORY MONTH SERIES: History Of Race & Politics In The Northeast ON ZOOM (*RR) Saturday, February 13, 10:30am From Brooklyn to Boston, from World War II to the present, Jason Sokol traces the modern history of race and politics in the Northeast. Why did white fans come out to support Jackie Robinson as he broke baseball's color barrier in 1947 even as Brooklyn's blacks were shunted into segregated neighborhoods? How was African-American politician Ed Brooke of Massachusetts, who won a Senate seat in 1966, undone by the resistance to desegregation busing in Boston? Is the Northeast's history a microcosm of America as a whole: outwardly democratic, but inwardly conflicted over race? Jason Sokol, an Associate Professor of History at the University of New Hampshire, is a historian of the civil rights movement. He is the author of three books: There Goes My Everything: White Southerners in the Age of Civil Rights; All Eyes Are Upon Us: Race and Politics from Boston to Brooklyn; and The Heavens Might Crack: The Death and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. A graduate from Oberlin College, Jason has received post-doctoral fellowships from Harvard, Penn and Cornell. All Ages Events Laughter Circle on FACEBOOK Monday, February 8, 7pm This program combines voluntary laughter exercises with gentle breathing techniques to teach the body how to laugh without relying on jokes or humor. This is a participatory program where we will create moments to laugh in through guided actions. No need to bring a yoga mat--most of the program is seated, with options for standing or gentle movement. What are the benefits of laughter? Mood elevates. Stress, depression and tension decrease. Immunity improves. Lung capacity increases through deep breathing, enhancing oxygen delivery to all parts of the body. Endorphin and serotonin levels rise.
