Firefighters Wave Bucs Flag; Sand Sculpture Welcomes Visitors

CLEARWATER, FL — Clearwater Beach has a new sand sculpture and the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department are flying the Buccaneers flag signaling it's time for the Super Bowl. On Friday the fire and rescue crew raised the Buccaneers flag from its 100-foot-high ladder truck on the Courtney Campbell Causeway to demonstrate the city's support for the hometown team. Meanwhile, Clearwater Beach welcomed visitors from Kansas City with a giant sand sculpture. Three master sand sculptors began creating the one-of-a-kind sand sculpture Wednesday, completing it in time for the arrival of Kansas City fans Friday. "Given the historic nature of seeing our home team - the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - play in the Super Bowl right here in our backyard, the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival partnered with the city of Clearwater to create a larger-than-life sand sculpture," Lisa Chander, founder of the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival said. "While we are disappointed we are unable to host the 2021 Sugar Sand Festival, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the sand to life in a show of support to the Bucs and Super Bowl LV." In addition to the sculpture, Sunsets at Pier 60 will host Super Bowl-themed shows with extended hours Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the festivities will wrap up at 8:30 p.m. On the day of the game, Sunday, Feb. 7, the fun will begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. The celebration features artisans, vendors and street performers. Those in attendance are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines of wearing masks when they can't physically distance properly or wash hands.
