BAY AREA, CA — The California Highway Patrol will be on the hunt for intoxicated drivers in San Francisco and beyond this weekend, with Super Bowl Sunday coming up. Last Super Bowl Sunday, CHP made more than 300 arrests for driving under the influence, which can include drunk or drugged driving. Four were killed in alcohol-related crashes and another 120 people were injured, CHP said in a news release. The public is urged to call 911 if they suspect drivers are intoxicated and be prepared to provide a car description, license plate number and the car's direction of travel. "The Super Bowl is one of the most celebrated sporting events of the year, and I am encouraging Californians to celebrate responsibly," CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said in the news release. "If you choose to drink, do not get behind the wheel. Designate a sober driver." California public health officials encourage people to minimize travel, stay close to home and limit gatherings to outdoor areas with up to three households. Drive sober, avoid distractions, buckle up and leave plenty of time to arrive at your destination, CHP said.
